Resilient Aging: Abundant Health
John 10:10 “….I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly”.
The word resilient is not new and is defined as the ability to bounce back from a stressful event or an adverse stressor. With our country, state and city aging rapidly, resilience is a pillar of successful aging. How do we promote wellness to build individual and community resilience? Aging and resilience trajectories are determined by multiple interacting factors. Protective factors include having a purpose in life, a better perceived health, optimism, locus of control, social connectivity, spirituality, functioning independently, exercise practice. How do we increase protective factors that build resilient communities for older adults? The WHO Global Age-Friendly Cities Project aims to promote active aging by optimizing environment (transportation, housing, outdoor spaces, and buildings), social (participation, respect, and inclusion), employment, community support and health services. Many countries are implementing various programs at individual, community, and city levels to prevent or delay decline in physiological reserve, enhance psychological skills to extend health-span, which may possibly improve resilience in the long term. What can we do?
Come join us for a series of health and wellness promotion collaborative learning sessions at the Lake Oswego United Methodist Church. The topics include Blue Zones Living, The Power of Social Connection, Falls Prevention, and Dementia and Care giver health. These topics have been curated to bring you valuable information that you can use to enhance your resilience and promote health and wellness for yourself and for your church community and the community you live in.
Our presenters, Nirmala Dhar LCSW, ACSW, Older Adult Behavioral Health Lead Strategist for OHA, and Rod Harwood, M.Div., MA, QMHP-C with GOBHI are experienced specialists in the field of older adult behavioral health.
Topics will include “Blue Zone Living: How to Live to be a Hundred”, “The Power of Connection: It’s good for your health and well being!” “Falls Prevention: Falling is not a normal part of aging!” as well as “Living Under the Umbrella of Dementia: What is that like and how do you take care of you as a care partner with a person living with dementia.” Older adults and caregivers will both benefit from these presentations and there will be plenty of time for questions.
