How Can You Help?

The news has been full of images of wind and flooding, downed trees and power outages in the last week! There are people in the Carolinas living in shelters, being rescued by boat with nothing but the shirts on their backs. Those who evacuated may have no homes or damaged homes when they return. Typhoon Manghut made landfall on September 15, hitting the Phillipines and Hong Kong, leaving a swath of destruction, landslides, at least 81 dead in the Phillipines alone, and many still missing.

As Christians we want to help, give aide and support. How can we do this from afar?

1. Give to the United Methodist Committee on Relief.  UMCOR offers disaster relief at home and abroad by providing essential relief supplies, cleaning buckets, longterm support and rebuilding efforts and disaster preparedness training. Supplies were placed in strategic locations for relief efforts by UMCOR as the storms were nearing and Early Response Teams and Disaster Response Coordinators as ready to deploy as soon as conditions allow.

Conferences in North and South Carolina have already requested and UMCOR has awarded $10,000 in emergency grants which allow for immediate use in the area. Many parts of the area are currently inaccessible, but UMCOR anticipates access by the end of the week.

PRAY for those whose lives will be impacted by current disasters.
MAKE relief kits and send them to our relief-supply depots or an affiliate warehouse. Learn more about how to assemble and send a kit here.  (Our church will be a collection point for kits which will be taken to the UMCOR depot in October.)
GIVE towards the efforts of UMCOR and its partners. Donate to U.S. disaster response, international disaster response, or to the UMCOR undesignated fund. You can give online through our church by clicking here, going to the online giving page, choosing "other."  Be sure to mark your donation for "UMCOR Disaster Response." Visit the UMCOR website for more information.

2. Give Blood and Donations to the Red Cross

Lake Oswego United Methodist Church is hosting a Red Cross Blood Drive on Friday, September 21 from 1-6:30pm. There are still a few spots left! Sign up for a spot online!   Use LOUMC as the sponsor code.
